Recovering a mailbox for a user deleted through AD Users & Computers

$

Running Exchange 2013 CU2 w/ Active Directory at 2008 functional level. Have deleted mailbox retention time set to 30 days.  10 days ago, we deleted 3 former executive accounts through AD Users and Computers. Now the powers that be would like to recover the mailboxes to retrieve some old emails. Trying to restore the mailboxes using this information http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj863438(v=exchg.150).aspx, but the mailboxes are not showing up as disabled or detached. There are other mailboxes listed that were deleted at various times before and after these 3, but I do not know how they were deleted.

Should a mailbox deleted from AD Users & Computers be recoverable, or will the system hard delete the mailbox?  Is there a setting to change this behavior?  I do have backups and can restore via recovery database, but It would be much less time consuming to be able to reattach the mailbox.

Cannot create subfolder in Exchange 2010 mailbox for user in Exchange Shell

Hi;

I want to use Exchange Shell to create a set of subfolders in user's mailbox but not working.

New-MailboxFolder -Parent lastname.firstname:\Inbox -Name CreateFolderTest

My user account is on the OU like mycompany.local\Branch 1\user

it always says, the specified mailbox does not exist whenever I run the syntax with my administrator logon on the Exchange server.

But, I can create the subfolder to the administrator account mailbox when I logon to Administrator account.

I can use this command to list the existing folder in user mailbox.

Get-MailboxFolderStatistics-Identity user | ft Name,FolderPath

Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP)

Is there a definitive , supported way to enable Outlook Anywhere for selected clients. Or is it ALL or Nothing.

I have read some postings that have suggested PS cmdlet to enable individual users but it doesnt seem to work even though the cmd input was accepted. The cmd I tried was:

Get-Mailbox –Identity "username" | Set-CASMailbox -MAPIBlockOutlookRpcHttp:$False

Anyone really got this to work? My work place do not want everyone except the chosen few to use Outlook Anywhere due to the fact that users can actually save an entire mailbox (offline cacheing mode) which becomes a potential security risk.

Any help appreciated.

Exchange Admin Center - mailbox delegation

$

Hi

We use exchange 2013 server having migrated from exchange 2007 but we still use office 2007

i often need to connect to other users mailbox one scenarios one a user is off sick and and i have to grant myself delegation to his/her mailbox in order to connect to that user mailbox in outlook and forward any emails from customers received in that person's absence

what i found is when i use the EAC to grant myself delegation i then have that user's mailbox automatically mounted in my outlook 2007 all the time. is there anyway to stop this so i only need to add the user's mailbox by going to account settings. Right now i am having to go back to the EAC to remove delegation and then restart outlook for it to dismount which sometimes take a while to effect.

Also i am thinking if there is a way to grant delegation to all users mailboxes in one hit so i can access whenever there is a demand for this, obviously i dont want to end up with 70 users mailboxes mounted to mine!

i am not so experienced with exchange 2013 so would appreciate any assistance

Having trouble creating a custom classification rule for DLP

$

I'm trying to create a custom rule package to use in a DLP rule in Exchange 2013. The rule in question will hold a list of words we want users to avoid using and prompt them with a policy tip to verify that they understand that the word(s) in question will cause the email to be reviewed and then let them override if needed. From reading throughDeveloping Sensitive Information Rule Packages andMatching Methods and Techniques for Rule Packages on TechNet and this blog with a fully fleshed out example I was able to create the following rule (it's around 400 terms total but I included some of the non offensive examples)

<?xml version=”1.0″ encoding=”utf-16″?><RulePackage xmlns=”http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/2011/mce”&gt;<RulePack id=”b4b4c60e-2ff7-47b2-a672-86e36cf608be”><Version major=”1″ minor=”0″ build=”0″ revision=”0″/><Publisher id=”7ea13c35-0e58-472a-b864-5f2e717edec6″/><Details defaultLangCode=”en-us”><LocalizedDetails langcode=”en-us”><PublisherName>InternalUser</PublisherName><Name>Screener word list</Name><Description>Detects the presence of pre-defined words we need to monitor</Description></LocalizedDetails></Details></RulePack><Rules><!– SIG Screen match list–><Entity id=”acc59528-ff01-433e-aeee-13ca8aaee159″ patternsProximity=”300″ recommendedConfidence=”75″><Keyword id="Screener_List"><Group matchStyle="string"><Term>bet</Term><Term>collude</Term><Term>collusion</Term><Term>gamble</Term><Term>game a broker</Term><Term>game an order</Term><Term>game the broker</Term><Term>game the order</Term><Term>gaming a broker</Term><Term>gaming an order</Term><Term>gaming the broker</Term><Term>gaming the crowd</Term><Term>gaming the order</Term><Term>Inside information</Term><Term>insider</Term><Term>Jump ahead</Term><Term>Jump in front</Term><Term>Steal</Term><Term>Stole</Term><Term>FOR INTERNAL USE ONLY</Term></Group></Keyword></Entity></Rules></RulePackage>

But when I try to import via the following command

New-ClassificationRuleCollection –FileData ([Byte[]]$(Get-Content -path "C:\DLP\test.xml" -Encoding byte -ReadCount 0))

I get the following error:

Unable to continue processing classification rule collection payload for decryption or further validations. Payload may contain invalid data.+ CategoryInfo : InvalidData: (:) [New-ClassificationRuleCollection], ClassificationR...yptionException+ FullyQualifiedErrorId : [Server=BY2PR02MB412,RequestId=82192f38-4e5e-43d1-8774-c932e3ea962b,TimeStamp=3/17/2014 8:09:32 PM] [FailureCategory=Cmdlet-Classification

The Problem is I'm not 100% sure that I have the XML formatted correctly or if I'm doing something else wrong. I have tried the following :

  • Generating multiple random GUIDs for my XML
  • Saving the XML file as UTF-8 and UTF-8 without BOM
  • I even tried uploading the same example in the blog I mentioned above with the example GUIDs and new GUIDs and I get the same error.
  • I also tried using the MS example here at the bottom of the TechNet article Developing DLP Policy Template Files (the classification file creation and importing) with the supplied GUIDs and new GUIDs and received the same error as well

Configuring a .com mail domain on a .local server domain, and getting test emails to send.

Hello everyone:

First I would like to thank everyone to any assistance that they provide, I am very grateful.

The setup: 1 hyper-v server that is running server 2012 standard, and has exchange server 2013 standard installed and licensed successfully. We have 1 static IP that I PATing out to the network, and I am dedicating the ports that exchange will be using to be directly associated with the server at the firewall. We already own a .com domain through godaddy, and I will be setting up with them the subdomains for the mail server's smtp and external owa connectors to route to our static IP.

The issue that I am having is I used the install wizard on a .local server domain, and the emails that my dad's company will be using a .com mail domain. Also when I attempt a test email with the admin account the emails sit in the drafts folder.

I have already moved the database that holds the email accounts and mailboxes to a dedicated virtual hard drive that is currently 350 GB in size, and will dynamicly expand it as needed. I also already have a NIC on the hyper-v 2012 r2 server dedicated to the exchange server vm, and it is set on a static IP and the internal DNS entry is already entered.

Lastly I have already followed the guide for the install and post install via the TechNet article, and cross referenced with guides made by Lydia Bronze at blog.cloudshare.com and Phoummala Schmitt at www.petri.co.il.

Once I get the issues of the primary email domain switched from .local to .com, and I get a successful test email sent outside the domain, I can handle the rest. Again any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

outlook 2010 username/password prompt

I just upgraded to exchange 2013 from 2007 and now, all my external clients are prompted with a user/pass login. When they enter the info, it still prompts them again and again.

Internally, on my LAN, I had the same issue, but I got that resolved with a registry change, but the registry change did not solve the issue for the external clients.  I'm at a loss of what to do.  I even deleted the profile and ost file for one of the clients and I even upgraded him to outlook 2013, and it's still prompting for a user/pass externally.

Any thoughts or ideas?

Exchange 2010 Service Pack 2 rollup 8

I am receiving the following error message whenever I try to open the Microsoft Exchange Management Console. This is an On-Premise server that has the CAS, Hub and Mailbox roles assigned to it:

Connecting to remote server failed with the following error message : The WinRM client cannot process the request. It cannot determine the content type of the HTTP response from the destination computer. The content type is absent or invalid.

I have tried running the Exchange Management Troubleshooter (EMT) but all the issues that it found have been remedied and I still am receiving the same error.

I increased the MaxFieldLength and MaxRequestBytes keys in the registry under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\HTTP\Parameters. I set the MaxFieldLength to DEC value 40000 and MaxRequestBytes to DEC value 32768.

I made sure that the time on the Exchange server was the same as the domain controller and that the server was in the correct time zone.

I also followed the steps from the following Microsoft KB article: KB/2028305 and on http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2010/02/04/3409289.aspx.   Should I try removing the Powershell virtual directory and putting it back? Exchange 365 and in-place eDiscovery

$

I created dozens of in-place eDiscovery search in powershell for the users who have left the company, but we need to retain their mailboxes for legal compliance reasons. The powershells looked like this:

New-MailboxSearch -name "User1" -SourceMailboxes user1@domain.com -ExcludeDuplicateMessages $true -InPlaceHoldEnabled $true -ItemHoldPeriod 255

And when I go into the EAC> Compliance Mgmt> in-place eDiscovery, I can see all of them but their status says "Status: Search Not Started."  So I used the EAC to edit one, and check if I missed something, but everything from the PS script is correct, and when I clicked Save, again without actually changing anything, the search did start at that point! I looked at a few other cmdlets, and I found the start-mailboxsearch. So I issued:

start-MailboxSearch -Identity "User1"

But that comes back with "Unable to execute the task. Reason: TargetMailbox is required for copying messages returned by the search." So why am I able to use the EAC eDiscovery portion without having to specify TargetMailbox, but when I use Powershell I do have specify it?

Providing administrator(s) full mailbox access to all mailboxes (database) not working

$

I'm setting up a new Exchange 2013 org.  Everything is pretty fresh, only a few mailboxes have been added for testing.

I've added this permission, to provide full access to all the mailboxes in the database:

Get-MailboxDatabase -identity “Mailbox Database” | Add-ADPermission -user netadmin -AccessRights GenericAll -ExtendedRights Receive-As, Send-As
.
I've verified the permission in ADSI Edit.

I have verified the permission in the recipient's mailbox delegation properties.

However, while logged into OWA using the admin account, if I try to open another user's mailbox from OWA, I just get a sad face that says "Something went wrong :( " .

Any ideas? I've tried resetting the owa virtual directory...reset IIS, rebooted several times, no luck.

Thanks

Report by mailbox size and filter Powershell

HI all,

I just need help putting together a script that gives me a report based on mailbox size and domain used. So for instance, all mailboxes under domain1.com and the mailbox size of that user

I have found a script that will give me user names and mailbox size

Get-MailboxStatistics-Server'SERVERNAME'|where{$_.ObjectClass-eq Mailbox”}|Sort-ObjectTotalItemSize-Descending| ft @{label=”User”;expression={$_.DisplayName}},@{label=”TotalSize(MB)”;expression={$_.TotalItemSize.Value.ToMB()}}-auto>>c:\Temp\mailbox_size.txt

And one that gives me users filtered by domain name:

Get-Mailbox -ResultSize Unlimited | Select-Object Name, PrimarySMTPAddress, @{Name="EmailAddresses";Expression={$_.EmailAddresses -cmatch "smtp"}} | Where-Object {($_.PrimarySMTPAddress -like "*domain3.ch*") -or ($_.EmailAddresses -like "*domain3.ch*")} > c:\mailboxes.txt
But I just cant figure out how to get them to work together, thanks for any and all help!

Exchange 2013 SPAM issues

$

I have a new install of Exchange 2013, I enabled the anti-spam features.  From day one, my server has been sending out NDR spam from "Sender" <> (no sender just the two "<>") to user.ru, user.ro, user.gr, etc.

This issues is driving me crazy and there is almost zero info on the net with this issue.  I find it hard to believe a clean install does this right out of the box.  In Exchange 2007/10, I just have to tic a box in the transport agent.

Can someone help me please, I'm lost.  Hell I even installed GFI this morning just to see if that would make a difference and even GFI is letting the SPAM <> mail through without any issues.  It's just a matter of time before my server is blacklisted...

Thanks you,

TCMagic
